How Much Wire Do You Need?

When dog owners order from us, whether Innotek or Petsafe electronic dog proof fencing, it comes with standard 500 feet of 20-gauge wire. If the included wire is not enough for the larger area, dog owners can easily expand the wire boundary by buying additional wires. In addition to 500 feet of 20 gauge wire, all of our offered dog proof fencing systems have 50 marker flags and two wire splices.

What type of wire to use?

For the installation of any dog proof fencing system, ONLY use burial approved boundary wires. Burial approved wires will have a Polyurethane coat that makes it waterproof and a solid copper coat for ensure efficiency. Since this wire is going to be in the ground and exposed to the elements, it is vital that the wire used be durable and waterproof.

18-Gauge vs. 20-Gauge Wire

The standard for many of our dog proof fencing devices is a 20-Gauge wire. A 20-Guage wire is perfect for a yard with little vegetation, few trees, smooth and/or loose soil, and for lying next to a fence. You can also use an 18-Guage wire, which is ideal for a yard with many trees, thick vegetation, rocky soil, and suggested for above ground installation. An 18-Guage wire can be purchased with your device with our Wire Upgrade option.

Use 18-Gauge if:
» Rocky soil is present.
» If installing the wire above ground.
» If the yard has many trees.

Use 20-Gauge if:
» Yards with smooth, loose soil or clay.
» If laying the wire near a fence.
» If the yard has few trees.
